UNIONS TO VOTE ON EU REFERENDUM !

The unions differ over what action to take on the EU treaty. Union delegates are expected to back a call for a referendum on the EU treaty later - in direct opposition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Mr Brown says it is not needed because the treaty proposals are very different to the failed EU constitution on which a referendum had been promised.
But if the TUC conference supports the RMT and GMB motions, it could increase pressure on Mr Brown to hold one.
Tory leader David Cameron has promised to force a Commons debate on the issue.
The UK Independence Party and some Labour and Lib Dem MPs also back a referendum.
Charter of rights
The BBC's James Hardy said the unions, which are already supporting co-ordinated strikes over Mr Brown's public sector pay settlement, were expected to deliver a "fresh rebuff" to the prime minister.
The TUC will debate the two motions demanding a referendum and is expected to back at least one of them. On Tuesday the TUC failed to agree the wording of a statement which could have headed off the vote.

Cameron to push Commons vote

The unions want Mr Brown to sign up to a fundamental charter of rights, which enshrines employment protection.
The GMB is calling for a vote in order to push the government to end its opt-out. But the RMT's motion goes further in demanding that the TUC should actively campaign for a "no" vote in the event of a referendum.
Mr Brown says a referendum is not needed because the treaty is not the same as the constitution - on which the Labour government promised a referendum - which was rejected by Dutch and French voters in 2005. He has said he is confident that Parliament will pass the reform treaty.
But Conservative leader Mr Cameron pledged on Tuesday to hold an Opposition Day debate, calling for a referendum, soon after MPs return to Parliament in October.
He said: "Labour MPs should stick to what they promised. They should vote for our motion when we bring it forward in the House of Commons."
