S.A. POLICE CHIEF 'TO BE CHARGED' !

Police chief Jackie Selebi denies links to organised crime. South Africa's police chief Jackie Selebi is to be charged with corruption and "defeating the ends of justice", state prosecutors say. Mr Selebi, who was in court on Friday lodging an urgent application to try to stop the prosecution, is also the president of Interpol.

The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed it would now charge him but details of the case are not clear. Mr Selebi has been under investigation since last year and denies wrongdoing.

The BBC's Peter Biles in Johannesburg says the police commissioner is a controversial figure. For the past year, the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance, has been calling for him to resign or be suspended because of his alleged links to criminal activity.

Our correspondent says last September, the NPA obtained two warrants: one for Mr Selebi's arrest and the other a search warrant. But these were not acted upon, until the case was reviewed. It is not clear when the indictment will be served.
