The Edinburgh Fringe, which runs from 7 to 31 August, features 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows in 265 venues across the city. Here is a selection of some of the strangest venues.

1 A PUBLIC TOILET

The public toilets at the rear of the St James Shopping Centre are described in the Fringe programme as an "intimate and unusual" venue.

It is billed as a production of Waiting for Godot which brings Beckett to the bogs.

Pay £5 and watch a "burst of early evening toilet humour" from the nod/nod theatre company.

2 A FUDGE SHOP

If you ever wanted to listen to comedy and smell the sweet aroma of sugar-based confectionery, then this is for you.

Patch Hyde and Adam Tempest host a comedy club in The Fudge Kitchen on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Two stand-ups and free fudge for all, as well as a multi-media exploration of what it takes to be a top fudgeman.

3 SOMEONE'S FLAT

The venue for the show At Home with Holly is, sensibly enough, Holly's House.

Ring the doorbell on a basement flat in Edinburgh's New Town at 1507 BST and Holly Burn will take you on a comedy tour of her house.

Follow Holly from cooker to bath and be prepared to do your own dishes.

4 A RESTAURANT

The B'Est restaurant on Drummond Street is the location for two shows. The Faulty Towers Dining Experience invites you to enjoy a three-course meal with Basil, Sybil and hopeless waiter Manuel.

While the Most Important Show of the Day has fitness guru Richard Simms dispensing health advice while you enjoy breakfast.

5 A BAR

Scottish theatre company Gridiron, who did a previous show in a playground, take their latest show Barflies - adapted from stories by Charles Bukowski - to the Barony Bar.

The play looks at the pains and glories of drunkenness. Drink included in the price of the ticket.

6 CYBERSPACE

Award-winning performance artist Mikhail Tank presents Soul Photography: A Virtual One Man Show. His show will be live streamed via the internet.

7 A 'MYSTERY' ISLAND

The Bitter Belief of Cotrone the Magician is performed on a mystery island, about 25 minutes by boat from Newhaven Docks.

8 A CANAL BARGE

A 60ft widebeam barge at Edinburgh Quay is the location for an aquatic performance of the 3 Sisters, on a voyage Checkov never let them take.

9 MINING MUSEUM

The Lady Victoria Colliery will host Ae Fond Kiss, a lively journey through the life of Robert Burns - as well as a children's version of Treasure Island.

10 A SWIMMING POOL

The pool of the Apex International Hotel hosts a nightly water-based theatre production, including Ophelia (Drowning).
